How the CTS Key Changed Over the Years
1st Gen (Sigma Platform)
A standard transponder key with a Megamos ID48 chip inside the plastic head. You turn it in the ignition like any traditional key, but the PK3 immobilizer has to recognize that chip before the engine fires. Three buttons on the remote, CR2032 battery, and we program it through OBD-II right in your driveway.
1st Gen Facelift
A remote head key with the same Megamos ID48 chip and an upgraded PK3+ immobilizer. That means the remote buttons and the transponder are built into one unit instead of being separate pieces. Still a standard blade, still CR2032, still three buttons. Programming requires a PIN retrieval from the body control module before we can write the new key.
2nd Gen
This is where security got serious. GM switched to an ID46 chip and a high-security blade that requires precision cutting on specialized equipment. The PK3+ immobilizer is a step up from the earlier system, and the flip key design is slimmer and more pocketable. Three buttons, CR2032 battery, and OBD-II programming with EEPROM access for certain modules.
2nd Gen Facelift
Your 2014 or 2015 CTS introduced the proximity smart key with push-button start. Still running an ID46 chip under the PK3+ immobilizer, but now with four buttons and a laser-cut emergency blade tucked inside the fob. You never have to take the key out of your pocket to start the car. CR2032 battery, OBD-II programming, and we handle it all on-site.
3rd Gen (Alpha Platform)
GM moved to the Alpha platform and a Philips ID46 (PCF7937 GM Extended) chip with GM's Advanced Immobilizer security. This generation requires server authentication, meaning the programming tool has to connect to GM's online servers to authorize a new key. We carry licensed GM SPS access on every call, so we handle this in your driveway in Simi Valley or Camarillo without a tow to the dealer. Four buttons, laser-cut blade, CR2032 battery.
Which Key Does Your CTS Use?
A traditional metal key with a plastic head that holds the transponder chip. Looks like a regular car key, but the chip inside is what lets your CTS start.
The remote buttons are built right into the key head. One piece handles locking, unlocking, and starting your CTS.
A compact fob with a blade that folds into the housing. The high-security blade has grooves on both sides and requires specialized cutting equipment.
Push-button start fob that stays in your pocket. There is a hidden laser-cut emergency blade inside for manual door entry if the battery dies.
Same push-button start design as the 2014-2015, but with upgraded security that requires online server authorization during programming. This is the most advanced CTS key GM made.

Common CTS Key Problems
Transponder Synchronization Failure
Your 2003-2007 CTS cranks but will not start, security light flashing. Usually a battery replacement or jump confused the PKM module; the transponder lost sync with the immobilizer. We reprogram via OBD-II and get you running without a tow.
Key Fob Battery Drain
Culprit is almost always a faulty internal switch or cold solder joint on the fob board. We see this constantly on 2008-2015 CTS keys, where the remote drains a fresh CR2032 in a week or two. Before you buy a whole new key, let us inspect the board.
Immobilizer Antenna Ring Failure
First check on a 2014-2019 CTS no-start is the antenna ring around the ignition or start button. This small coil reads the transponder; when it fails, the car cannot detect the key. We test antenna resistance on-site and replace if needed, no dealer.
Proximity Sensor Malfunction
2016-2019 CTS owners blame the fob when the real problem is proximity sensors. CR2032 tests fine but door handles or interior sensors stop detecting the smart key intermittently. You get locked out next to your own car. We diagnose fob vs sensors first.
Can You Program a CTS Key Yourself?
The 2003-2007 CTS supports GM's 10-minute relearn procedure and a two-key add method. You can program the transponder yourself if you have a properly cut key with the correct Texas 4D chip, but this only programs the immobilizer, not the remote buttons.
The 2008-2013 CTS also supports the GM 10-minute relearn for transponder programming. You need a cut key with an ID46 chip, and the process takes about 30 to 35 minutes total. Remote functions still require professional programming.
You can add a new proximity fob if you already have two working smart keys using GM's key learn procedure through the DIC. If all keys are lost, there is a 40-minute relearn that handles the remote and proximity functions, but the transponder and emergency blade still require professional tools and, for 2016-2019, GM server authentication.
