Over in the Peninsula Park area of Oxnard, a CTS owner called me because her smart key was falling apart. Not the electronics. The physical shell.
The chrome accent ring around the buttons had cracked and separated. The rubber button pad was peeling off at the edges, and the emergency HU100 blade wiggled in the slot instead of locking in place. Every Cadillac owner I see with a few years on the fob has a version of this. The HYQ2AB shell wears in the same spots every time: button pad first, then the seam, then the blade retention.
She had already been to the dealer. They told her the whole fob needed replacing. New fob, new programming through the body control module, new blade cut. No mention that the internal circuit board, the one stamped with the GM part number 13580811, was working perfectly fine. The chip talked to the car. The buttons still registered when pressed hard enough. It was a housing problem, not an electronics problem.
I moved the working board and transponder into a fresh aftermarket shell on her kitchen counter. New button pad, solid blade retention, clean seam. Cut a new HU100 emergency blade to match her door lock using a Lishi pick and decoder I carry in the van.
Took about twenty minutes. She kept the same programmed chip, same frequencies, same car recognition. Just a body swap on the fob for a fraction of what the dealer quoted.
