Right, this generation CTS uses a transponder key that goes in the ignition, not a proximity fob. There's no hidden blade to pop out of a key fob because there is no fob on this setup.

If you lock the key inside, you're dealing with a physical lockout, not an electronic one. An automotive locksmith can get the door open without damaging the car. That's a faster and cheaper call than a dealer, and you don't need to tow it anywhere. Once you're in, we can also cut a spare on site so you don't end up back in the same situation.

My 2004 CTS starts for a second and then immediately dies. Is that a key problem?

That start-then-stall pattern is a common sign the immobilizer didn't accept the key. The engine fires because the mechanical cut is correct, then shuts down because the security system didn't get a valid signal from the transponder chip.

A few things cause this. The chip inside the key head can fail or crack, especially on older keys that have been on a heavy keyring or dropped hard. A worn key blank where the chip isn't seated properly does the same thing. You may also see a security-related warning on the dash when it happens.

Before assuming the worst, check whether a different working key starts it cleanly. If one key works and the other triggers the stall, the problem is that specific key, not the car. If neither key works, you're looking at a relearn or a deeper immobilizer issue, both of which we can diagnose on site.

I bought a replacement key blank online for my 2004 CTS. Can I just have it cut and use it, or does it need programming too?

It needs both. The blade has to be cut to your specific lock, and the transponder chip inside the key head has to be programmed to your vehicle's immobilizer. Cutting alone gets you into the door but the car won't start, or it'll do the start-then-stall.

Whether the blank you bought will work depends on whether it has the right chip type inside. Not all aftermarket blanks are equal, and some sold online don't have a chip at all or have the wrong one for this application. Bring it and I'll check it before we go any further. If it's usable, we cut and program it on site. If it's not, I carry the right blanks with me.
