Over near Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura, a guy flagged me down in the parking structure. Not my scheduled call. He had seen the van while I was finishing another job nearby.
His 2006 CTS had one key left, and it was chewed up. The blade was worn down enough that it barely turned the ignition cylinder, and he had been jiggling it for weeks. He told me he knew the day was coming where it just would not go in anymore. Today was that day.
I decoded the lock on the driver door, cut a fresh B112 blade on a new 5928825 blank, and seated the Megamos 48 chip. Then came the part nobody loves: the PK3+ relearn. Three cycles, 10 minutes each, key sitting in RUN while the theft deterrent light on the dash slowly blinks and then goes solid. We stood there talking between cycles. He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a tow plus a full day's wait, and he had just kept putting it off.
After the third cycle, clean start. I turned it off, started it again, turned it off, started it a third time. Then I handed him the old key back and told him to keep it somewhere as a backup blade, because the chip was still registered.
He looked at the clock on the dash. Thirty-eight minutes, start to finish, right there in the structure. No tow truck, no waiting room, no shuttle ride home.
