Got a call from a guy near Wilson Park in Oxnard. His 2018 CTS was sitting in the hotel lot, dead to the world. Push-to-start did nothing. "No Remote Detected" on the dash.
He had already tried the backup method, holding the fob flat against the start button to bridge the short-range coil. Nothing. Tried the emergency HU100 blade in the steering column slot. Still nothing. At that point he called the Cadillac dealer. They told him to have it towed in and they could see it the next afternoon.
He found me online and I headed out that evening.
First thing I checked was his fob. The CR2032 was corroded on one side, probably sat in that shell for two years without a swap. That explained the passive entry failure, but not why the backup hold-to-start trick failed too. Turned out the short-range antenna coil behind the start button was reading the fob fine, the BCM just had a registration glitch. I connected through the OBD port, ran the programming sequence on the body control module, and re-registered his original fob plus a fresh spare I cut and programmed on site.
The whole job took about 35 minutes in the parking lot. He watched me cut the HU100 blade right in the van. No tow, no waiting room, no next-afternoon appointment. He kept asking if the car would forget the key again. It will not.
