A guy came out to North Ranch from out of state visiting his daughter for the Thanksgiving stretch. He had a 2010 CTS and one working fob. He wanted a second key cut and programmed as a true daily driver, not a drawer backup, and he wanted to know straight up whether aftermarket was worth anything or if he needed to track down a dealer.
He had done his homework. He already knew what the factory fob looked like and had looked up the part number before I arrived. He asked me directly whether the chip in an aftermarket blank would talk to the same body control module his original fob used. Fair question. The whole job was done before they finished coffee inside.
He mentioned the dealer back home had quoted him considerably more for an OEM fob plus the programming visit. He was not expecting to come out to Thousand Oaks for the holiday and leave with a working spare key at a fraction of that. I just told him to keep the CR2032 fresh and not to wait until the fob is completely dead to swap it.
