How Your ATS Key System Evolved
1st Generation (Early)
OBD-II programming makes this one straightforward, at least by Cadillac standards. Your 2013 or 2014 ATS uses a smart key with a Philips PCF7952 (Hitag2) transponder chip, running on GM's keyless entry immobilizer. It is a proximity fob with push-button start, a CR2032 battery, and a hidden high-security emergency blade tucked inside.
1st Generation (Mid)
OBD-II programming still handles these years cleanly. The 2015 and 2016 ATS carry the same Philips ID46 (PCF7937) chip and GM keyless entry immobilizer as the earlier models, so the key hardware did not change even though GM swapped in an 8-speed transmission for 2016. Same smart key, same CR2032 battery, same high-security blade.
1st Generation (Late)
OBD-II programming is still the foundation here, but GM added server authentication on top of it. Your 2017 through 2019 ATS runs an Philips ID46 (PCF7937 GM Extended) transponder chip paired with GM's Enhanced Immobilizer, which means the programming tool has to talk to GM's servers during the process. We carry the tools and subscriptions to handle that on-site, no tow to the dealer required.
Which Key Does Your ATS Use?
Black proximity fob with push-button start. You keep it in your pocket and the car unlocks when you walk up. The emergency blade flips out for manual door entry if the battery dies.
Same proximity fob design as the earlier years. Three buttons, push-button start, and a flip-out high-security blade for emergencies. Functionally identical to the 2013-2014 key.
Updated fob design is possible on these years, but the layout is the same: three buttons, push-button start, CR2032 battery. The difference is under the hood, where GM's Enhanced Immobilizer requires server authentication during programming.
What Your ATS Key Costs
Price includes the key blank, high-security blade cutting, transponder programming, and testing; lockouts are $95-$125.
Us vs. the Dealer
No tow truck, no waiting room, no three-day hold on your car.
Common ATS Key Problems
Smart Key Battery Drain
ATS owners assume the fob is defective when it dies constantly. Usually not. The proximity system pings constantly even parked, draining the CR2032 faster than expected. Storing the fob in a drawer away from the car at night can double battery life.
Transponder Programming Failures
First check on a 2015-2019 ATS that will not accept a new key is the security PIN. Without it, OBD-II tools spin and fail. We pull the PIN from EEPROM via Autel IM608 or VVDI so programming sticks first try. Botched prior attempts? We clean up on-site.
Immobilizer Sync Loss
After a dead battery or jump, the BCM and ECU can fall out of sync on 2013-2017 models. Fob still locks doors, engine will not crank, transponder no longer authenticated. Needs a full OBD-II relearn, not a new key. We handle it on-site under 30 minutes.
High-Security Blade Wear
Nobody thinks about the emergency blade until the fob dies in an Oxnard Costco lot. Then they find the laser-cut blade has rounded over inside the housing. On high-mileage ATS that blade will jam the door cylinder. We cut fresh blades on-site.
Can You Program an ATS Key Yourself?
You can program the remote functions yourself using the door key cylinder method, either with an existing programmed key or through the 30-minute learn procedure. But the transponder chip, the part that actually lets the engine start, requires professional OBD-II programming. So you can get the locks and panic button working, but you will still need us to make the car start.
Same situation as the earlier years. The remote portion can be self-programmed using the door cylinder learn mode. The transponder chip needs professional tools and the vehicle's security PIN. Without that step, the fob will lock and unlock but the engine will not turn over.
You can still self-program the remote functions, but the transponder programming on these years requires both OBD-II access and server authentication through GM. That is not something you can do in the driveway with a YouTube video. Call us at (805) 790-8162 and we will handle the full job on-site.

Did You Know?
You would not guess it, but the Cadillac ATS smart key system with passive entry and push-button start was specifically engineered to match what BMW offered on the 3 Series. GM built the ATS on the Alpha platform and borrowed heavily from European luxury conventions, making it one of the first American sedans to go all-in on proximity key technology as a direct competitive response.
