Got a call from a woman over in Bel Air Knolls neighborhood in Santa Barbara. Her 2016 Cadillac ATS smart key was falling apart. The chrome trim ring around the edge had cracked, the rubber button pad was lifting off the face, and the emergency blade wiggled in its slot like a loose tooth.

Moved the working circuit board into the fresh shell, pressed in new button pads, and cut a new emergency insert blade right there. Tested proximity unlock on both front doors, the trunk release, remote start, and the push-button ignition. Everything responded first try.
She kept turning the new shell over in her hands like she was waiting for something to be wrong with it. Nothing was. The expensive part of that fob, the programmed electronics, never needed replacing. She paid a fraction of what they wanted at the dealer for a job that took me about twenty minutes on her front porch.
