She lives up in Mission Canyon, one of those driveways that dead-ends into a hillside, and she had been putting off the key situation for longer than she wanted to admit.

The fob still worked. Mostly. The lock and unlock buttons were getting flaky because the rubber pad had started peeling away from the face of the housing, so the buttons needed a firm press instead of a normal one. The chrome ring around the edge had cracked in two places and left a sharp corner that was catching on the fabric of her bag every time she reached in. What she actually needed was a shell, fresh button pad, and a properly fitted emergency blade, because the circuit board inside was reading fine and the car had no complaints about the key.

I met her in the driveway with replacement fob shells. The factory FCC ID on her fob matched exactly what I was expecting for this car. I popped the old housing, moved the board and the transponder over to the fresh shell, seated the button pad, fitted the blade correctly so it locked in place, and dropped in a new CR2032 while everything was open. Tested every button walking the car, checked the door handles, confirmed the start button was happy.

The dealer quote assumed the worst. The actual job was a shell swap and took about twenty minutes. She saved a good chunk, and the fob felt like new again.
