Got a call from a guy staying at a hotel in the Downtown area of Santa Barbara. His 2017 ATS wouldn't respond to push-to-start. Dead fob, and it was his only one. He'd already tried holding it against the start button for the backup detection, but nothing.
He called the nearest Cadillac dealer. They told him to tow it in and they could probably look at it the next afternoon. He wasn't thrilled about losing a full day of his trip plus paying for a tow on top of the key work.
I drove out that evening. Connected to the OBD-II port and pulled up the BCM. The original fob's transponder had dropped out of the module's memory, which happens occasionally on these second-gen ATS units when the battery dies at the wrong moment during a communication cycle. The BCM just stops seeing the key ID.
Cut a new emergency blade in the van, programmed a fresh HYQ2AB fob through the diagnostic port, and registered it to the BCM. Whole thing took about 35 minutes. Then I walked the car: tested proximity unlock on all four doors, trunk release, remote start, and push-button start from both front seats.
He stood there watching me test the fourth door and said, "I figured this was going to ruin tomorrow too." It didn't. He was back to his evening in under an hour, for a fraction of what the dealer quoted.
