I was parked near the Las Positas corridor in Santa Barbara on a Tuesday, finishing up a different job, when a message came in about a 2018 ATS. The owner had been using a backup fob for a few weeks after her primary one stopped being detected at the door handles. Then the backup started doing the same thing. She figured both fobs were dying at once and assumed she needed two new keys.
She had already called the dealer. They told her to bring the car in, quoted her a wait time measured in days, and said they'd diagnose it first before committing to anything. That last part is the one that gets people. You go in for a key and come out with a diagnostic charge before anyone touches a fob.
I pulled up to her in a surface lot off Las Positas and started with the basics. Both fobs had the original batteries. One of them, the backup she'd been using, had a CR2032 that was reading low on a meter. That alone can make the body control module inconsistent about detecting the key, especially at the door handle versus inside the car. Swapped the battery, reseated it clean, and her backup fob came back to life.
The primary fob was a different story. The battery was fine, but after checking range and button response it was clear the fob itself had an internal issue. I programmed a new the factory FCC ID to her vehicle right there, cut the emergency blade to match her door cylinder, and ran through every function: door handles, lock, unlock, and the remaining buttons. Then I re-registered the working backup fob in the same session so both were active and she left with two keys again.
The whole thing was done before she had to be anywhere. She mentioned the dealer estimate as an afterthought. She'd paid a fraction of what they were going to charge, and she didn't lose her car for three days to find that out.
