Got a call from the Hidden Valley neighborhood in Santa Barbara. A woman had one working smart key left on her 2013 ATS and the backup had been missing for months. She finally decided to deal with it after reading online that if the last fob dies, the dealer wants the car towed in and the job can sit for days.
I pulled up to her driveway and started with the mechanical side. Decoded the lock cylinder and cut the emergency insert blade on the new fob, GM profile HU100. Clean cuts, smooth turns in the driver's door, confirmed both ways.
Then the diagnostic work. Connected my IM608 to the OBD-II port under the dash, accessed the BCM, pulled the security seed, and kicked off the theft deterrent relearn. The 2013 ATS runs the standard GM 10-minute security countdown. That timer is built into the module and there is no way to skip it. So we stood in her driveway and she asked me why the dealer quoted her a wait time measured in days for something that has a 10-minute timer. Honest answer: I don't know either.
Once the countdown cleared, both fobs registered. I tested every button on each one. Lock, unlock, trunk, remote start, panic. Walked to the end of the driveway and tested range from about 40 feet. Three consecutive push-button starts, cold. Checked that the door handle touch sensors triggered lock and unlock with the fob in a pocket.
She kept her old fob in one hand and the new one in the other, pressing buttons back and forth like she was comparing them. Both worked the same. That is the whole point.
