How the XT5 Key System Has Changed
1st Generation (C1XX)
Server authentication is required for programming, which means we connect to GM's secure servers right from your driveway using our MDI2 tool. Your XT5 uses a smart key (FCC HYQ2EB) with a Philips ID46 (PCF7937 GM Extended) transponder chip and GM's Hitag2 keyless immobilizer system. Push-button start is standard across all trims, and the emergency blade tucked inside the fob is an HU100 profile.
1st Gen Facelift (C1XX)
Server-based programming carries over from the earlier years, so the process is identical on our end. Cadillac updated the infotainment and added a 9-speed transmission, but the key system stayed the same: Philips ID46 chip, GM keyless immobilizer, 5-button smart key with rechargeable battery. If you had a 2018 and upgraded to a 2021, your key experience is basically unchanged.
1st Gen Facelift 2 (C1XX)
Server authentication is still the method here, but GM carries the same Philips ID46 (PCF7937 GM Extended) transponder chip. We verify the exact chip before we cut anything. The PKM immobilizer continues, and the smart key looks the same from the outside, but the security handshake under the hood got tighter.
1st Gen Refresh (C1XX)
Server-level programming with GM's latest SPS subscription is mandatory for these years. Your 2024-2025 XT5 continues with the Philips ID46 (PCF7937 GM Extended) transponder chip paired with GM's Advanced Immobilizer, requiring server authentication for programming. The 48V mild hybrid system and available Super Cruise are new, but the key itself is still a 3-button smart fob with a rechargeable battery and hidden emergency blade.
Which Key Does Your XT5 Use?
A black 5-button proximity fob with the Cadillac crest. It has a hidden metal emergency blade for backup door entry. CR2032 coin cell battery inside; user-replaceable when it dies.
Same physical fob design as earlier years, but with an upgraded transponder chip inside. We verify the exact chip type by VIN before programming to make sure everything matches.

Common XT5 Key Problems
Key Fob Battery Drain
XT5 owners think the fob is broken when it is actually battery drain. The rechargeable battery in your smart key talks to proximity sensors constantly. That handshake wears the battery faster than expected. Fob dies repeatedly? We test the charge cycle.
Immobilizer Sync Failure
First check on a 2017-2021 XT5 that cranks but will not start is transponder sync between key and ECM. A dead car battery or jump can knock the PKM immobilizer out of alignment. We run a full ECM/PKM relearn with our MDI2 tool on-site, no tow needed.
Proximity Sensor False Triggers
Faulty door-handle sensors cause passive entry to unlock or even start the car when no key is nearby. Affects 2020-2025 models; a hardware issue in the antenna, not a key problem. We diagnose fob vs vehicle sensors so you do not waste money on the wrong part.
Push-Start Button Failure
Press the start button and nothing. Maybe it works on the third try. On 2017-2019 XT5s this is usually a failing key antenna ring around the steering column or a BCM glitch, not the button. We test fob signal and antenna response to pinpoint the real cause.
Can You Program an XT5 Key Yourself?
Yes, if you have at least one working key, GM built in a 30-minute relearn procedure that uses your emergency blade and the door cylinder cylinder. It involves three 10-minute wait cycles and erases all existing keys, so have every key you want to keep on hand. It works, but it takes patience and precise timing.
If you already have two working smart keys, adding a third is much simpler. You place each key in the transmitter pocket in the center console, press the start button, and the car learns the new one. No wait cycles, no erasing. This only adds keys; it does not replace lost ones.

Did You Know?
Back in 2017, Cadillac did something unusual with the XT5. It introduced the Keyless Access system alongside Electronic Precision Shift, which replaced the traditional gear shifter with a row of buttons on the center console. It was a bold move that gave the interior a futuristic, cockpit-like feel and freed up a surprising amount of console space.
