A woman pulled into the Westside area of Santa Barbara from the Mesa side on her way back from an errand run. She was parked at the pharmacy near Hollister, fob in her pocket, and the XT5 just sat there.
No click, no door unlock, nothing. She tried the backup method she'd read about, placing the fob in the center console pocket and pressing the brake, and got the car started that way. But she knew that was a band-aid.
She'd already called the dealer. They told her they'd need to schedule her, verify programming, and get back to her in a few days.
She called me instead.
When I got to her, the CR2032 was reading borderline on my tester. Not dead, but soft enough to drop out under passive entry load. I swapped the cell, cleaned the contacts inside the fob housing, and walked every function: passive lock and unlock at both front handles, the start button response with the fob in pocket versus fob in hand, and all five buttons. Everything came back solid.
Then I pulled out my diagnostic tool anyway. Because on a current-generation GM vehicle, I want to see what the body control module and the vehicle security system have logged. No faults. Clean. She didn't need a new fob, didn't need a dealer visit, didn't need to wait three days.
She mentioned she'd looked me up on the BSIS site before calling because her last locksmith had handed her a receipt with nothing on it. No license, no company name, a phone number that disconnected inside a week. She said she wasn't doing that again.
I handed her a receipt with my license number, my business name, and a real callback number. The work was done on site, in under an hour, for a fraction of what the dealer had quoted just to get her in the door.
