2022 Cadillac XT5 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
I was parked on State Street in Downtown Santa Barbara, finishing up a job, when the call came in. XT5 owner, nearby, key wasn't being detected. She'd already tried the obvious stuff.
When I got there she handed me the fob. The CR2032 was the first thing I checked. It tested fine. That meant this was a programming job, not a battery fix.
I laid out the process for her before I touched anything. Verify ownership, decode the lock, cut the emergency blade so the mechanical side is right, then connect to the OBD port and work through the security system to register the new fob. She watched the whole thing from about ten feet away, which I prefer. Nothing about this job needs to be hidden from the person who owns the car.
The security countdown is the part that always makes people nervous. The tool just sits there, timer running, and it looks like nothing is happening. I told her that was normal. It finished, I registered the fob, and then came the part she wasn't expecting: I didn't hand it to her and pack up. I walked the car. Checked every button. Tested range from across the lot. Did three consecutive push-to-starts. Tried the touch sensors on both door handles. Then I showed her the emergency blade and where the hidden door keyhole is on her specific car, because she had no idea either existed.
She said the dealer had quoted her a wait of several days and a number she didn't want to repeat out loud. She called me instead, got it done on State Street in about an hour, and drove off knowing every function had been verified.
