2020 Cadillac XT5 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
There's a parking lot right off the Funk Zone strip that gets busy on weekends, and that's exactly where this one landed.
A guy had both his 2020 XT5 key fobs with him -- one primary, one he called the "backup I never actually use." The backup had been sitting in a drawer for about eight months. He grabbed it heading out that morning because his primary was acting up, range was short, doors sometimes didn't unlock until he was right on top of the handle. Somewhere between the wine tasting and the walk back to his car, both fobs decided they were done cooperating at the same time.
He called me. I was already in Santa Barbara, so I got to him in under twenty minutes.
The primary fob had a CR2032 that was nearly dead. The backup had one too, but that one had also been sitting drained long enough that the fob itself had developed a contact corrosion issue inside the battery tray. Neither one was actually failed in any permanent way.
I opened both on the hood of the XT5. Primary got a fresh CR2032, contact points cleaned. The backup needed a little more attention -- the battery tray contact had a slight oxidation layer that was breaking the circuit intermittently. Cleaned it properly, seated a new cell, and both fobs came back fully functional. Tested every button, tested passive door handle unlock, confirmed the vehicle recognized both fobs without any reprogramming needed because neither fob had lost its pairing.
He asked what the dealer would have said. I told him honestly: if he walked in with two fobs acting up simultaneously, there's a reasonable chance the conversation would have moved toward replacement before anyone looked at the battery contacts. He saved himself that whole detour.
Two fobs, twenty-five minutes, back to the tasting rooms.
