A guy in Downtown Carpinteria texted me on a Sunday afternoon. He had been running errands on Linden Avenue, stopped at a shop, came back out, and his XT5 would not acknowledge the fob at all. Door handles were dead. The dash was giving him a key-not-detected warning every time he got close. He still had the fob in his hand.
He had already tried the backup: holding the fob against the start button to use the built-in RF fallback. The car cranked. So the fob was alive, barely, but the proximity system had given up on it entirely.
I pulled up to where he was parked on the street. He watched me open the fob on the hood of my van. The CR2032 inside had voltage but was borderline. More interesting was the battery clip, which had a slight outward bow from a previous swap. The cell was not making solid contact, so the fob was running lean on power and dropping out of the proximity range it needed to trigger the door handles.
New CR2032, clip bent back to spec, battery seated correctly. Walked all four door handles, tested the start button from outside the car, ran all five buttons. Everything came back. Took about fifteen minutes on the curb.
He mentioned the dealer was his next call if I couldn't sort it. Given it was a Sunday, that call would have gone to voicemail.
