Near Leadbetter Beach, an XT5 owner learned the hard way that aftermarket keys aren't all the same. She'd bought one online, had another locksmith program it, and it worked great. For exactly three days.
Then the car started throwing "No Remote Detected" every other start. The push button would work fine in the morning, dead by lunch. She'd hold the fob right against the button, sometimes it caught, sometimes nothing. The original key still worked perfectly.
When I got there, I plugged in and pulled codes. The BCM had logged multiple authentication failures from key slot 2. The aftermarket fob was broadcasting the right frequency but the wrong encryption format. These XT5s use rolling code with AES-128, not the older fixed code some clones try to mimic.
I programmed a proper HYQ2ES with the correct Hitag Pro chip. The BCM accepted it immediately, no drama. While I was at it, I checked her original key's battery. CR2032 reading 2.6V, right on the edge of failure. Swapped that too.
She asked what the dealer would charge for the same work. I told her their quote would probably make her forget all about the online key that started this mess. Way more than what I charged, plus she'd lose the car for a day.
