A woman on the Eastside of Santa Barbara came to me through a referral. She had already been down the wrong road once.
Another locksmith had made her a replacement key for her 2021 XT5 a few weeks earlier. It worked the first day. Then it got weird. Push-to-start would respond fine in the morning, then by mid-afternoon she would walk up, press the button, and get a key-not-detected warning on the dash. No pattern to it. The transponder enrolled in the vehicle did not match what was actually inside the fob she had been given. It had passed the initial pairing because the first security check is relatively shallow. The system caught up with it over repeated drive cycles and started flagging it intermittently. That is exactly the kind of failure that looks like a car problem instead of a key problem.
I programmed a new fob with the correct transponder matched to the factory FCC ID on her original registration, replaced the CR2032 while I was in there, and walked every button and every door handle. Push-to-start, door touch sensors, the works. Everything confirmed clean before I left.
She called three days later just to say it had been working perfectly. That was the whole message.
