Got a call from up in the Mission Canyon area in Santa Barbara. An ATS owner had one working smart key left after her other fob went through the wash a month earlier. She had been putting off the replacement because the dealer told her to bring the car in and leave it for half a day minimum, and the number they quoted her was steep enough to keep procrastinating.
Then the surviving fob started acting weird. Short range on the passive entry. Had to hold it against the start button to get the engine going. Classic CR2032 fade, but she didn't know that yet. She just knew she was one dead battery away from being locked out with zero working keys, and the all-keys-lost scenario on these is a bigger job for everyone involved.
I met her in her driveway. Popped open the working fob first. The CR2032 was original, three years old, voltage was low. Fresh battery brought that one back to full range immediately. She watched the door handle respond from ten feet away and her shoulders dropped about two inches.
Then I cut and programmed the replacement HYQ2AB through OBD using the Smart Pro. The BCM on the 2019 ATS accepts the new key, runs the theft deterrent relearn, and erases the old washed fob so it is permanently dead to the car. Whole visit was about 25 minutes.
She went from one half-dead key and a lot of stress to two fully working smart keys for a fraction of what the dealer wanted, without leaving her driveway.
