Over in the College neighborhood of Ventura, I got a call from a guy at a casual Cadillac meetup who had already been burned once. He had called one of those "$49 to come out" operations, and by the time that locksmith was done, he had paid far more than he expected and the job was only half finished. The fob would lock the doors but the console-slot start was intermittent. The car would sometimes crank, sometimes just sit there.

I ran the registration sequence again from scratch, confirmed the fob was reading in the console slot from every angle, walked all five buttons, and tested console-slot start a handful of times in a row until it was solid every time.
He paid exactly what I quoted him on the phone. He mentioned the dealer price he had been given before he went the cheap route. It was a lot more than what he paid me, and the irony was that the bargain locksmith ended up costing him more than I would have.
