Got a call from a guy at a Cadillac owners meetup near Ventura Promenade. He sounded tired before he even told me the problem.
His 2008 CTS smart key had been "fixed" already. He'd called one of those cheap Google ad locksmiths, the kind that quote low and charge high. The tech left him with a fob that would lock and unlock the doors but push-to-start only worked about half the time. Sometimes the dash would throw "No Remote Detected," sometimes it would just crank and die. He'd been starting the car by holding the fob in the console slot like a workaround, not a fix.

On site, I pulled up the fob on my Smart Pro and ran the GM prox add-key procedure through the slot and Start/Stop button. The previous tech had half-registered the M3N5WY7777A, so the body control module saw it as a remote but not a valid ignition credential. Clean re-registration, all five buttons verified, push-to-start solid on every attempt. I walked the perimeter checking range on lock, unlock, and passive entry.
He watched the whole thing from the hood. Didn't say much until it was done. Then just, "That's what it was supposed to do the first time." Paid exactly what I quoted on the phone. A fraction of what the dealer wanted, and less than the other locksmith charged for a job he couldn't finish.
