A guy visiting his daughter for Thanksgiving near Ventura Pier called me about his 2003 Cadillac CTS. He had one working key and wanted a spare, but not a junk drawer backup. He wanted to carry it daily and needed to know if an aftermarket key would hold up the same as factory.
Fair question.
I get it a lot on these first-gen CTS cars because the OEM key with the Cadillac crest on the bow looks premium and people assume the aftermarket version is somehow lesser. The reality is the B112 blade profile is identical, the Megamos ID48 chip inside is the same spec that talks to his BCM, and the plastic housing takes the same daily beating. The only difference you can see is no crest logo on the back.
I cut the key on the hood of his daughter's driveway, got him in the car, and we sat through the PK3+ relearn together. Three ten-minute cycles. He watched the SECURITY telltale on the instrument cluster blink, go solid, blink, go solid. Thirty minutes of small talk about his daughter's new apartment and whether the pier was worth walking.
After the third cycle the car started clean. No hesitation, no crank-no-start, no SECURITY light staying on. He turned it off and started it again just to be sure. Then one more time.
He drove off with a daily-carry spare that works the same as his original, for a fraction of what the dealer quoted him over the phone.
