Out in Casitas Springs, a guy flagged me down through a mutual contact. He'd already had work done on his 2009 CTS key. Paid someone else. Engine would crank, sound like it was about to start, then cut out after a second or two. He assumed the worst. Previous guy told him the body control module was shot and walked away.
I've seen that call before. That crank-and-die pattern on these is almost textbook for a key that got partially written during a botched programming session. The blade cut was correct, I verified that first. But the transponder enrollment hadn't completed fully. The security learn sequence on these has a timed cycle built in, and if anything interrupts it or the procedure gets rushed, the key registers temporarily and then falls out. Car acts like it starts. It doesn't.
I connected through the OBD port, cleared the corrupted key data, and ran a clean enrollment with the full timing respected. Then I tested it. Started clean. Did it twice more. Three for three with no fuel cutoff.
The body control module was never the issue. The previous locksmith just hadn't finished the job.
He'd already spent money on that first attempt, which I couldn't undo. But at least when I left, the key worked the way it was supposed to, and he paid a fraction of what the dealer wanted for the same outcome.
