A guy in the South Surfside neighborhood of Port Hueneme called me on a Saturday morning. He had just bought a 2004 Escalade at an estate sale the week before. The family had handed him a single key with a worn fob, told him it worked, and that was that.
He tried to get a spare cut locally and the shop told him they could do the blade but not the programming. Then he called the Cadillac dealer, who quoted him a number that made him pause long enough to search for another option.
I met him in his driveway. The original fob was the 3-button style with the factory FCC ID still legible on the back, matching the dealer part number he had looked up. CR2032 inside, battery was weak but not dead. I opened it up and the contact for the positive terminal had a slight inward bow, which explained why range had been getting worse for months.
We sorted the fob first, then I cut a new key blade to the vehicle and ran the transponder learn through the OBD port to get the second key recognized by the immobilizer. The whole job was done in the driveway. He tested both keys himself, tried every button, started it twice.
The dealer comparison came up once, at the end, when he mentioned what they had quoted. He said it out loud, shook his head, and that was about it. He drove off with a working spare and a fixed original.
