Got a call from a guy out on the Rice Avenue corridor in Oxnard. His 1999 Escalade would crank but not fire, and the security light on the dash was holding steady. He had already tried his spare key. Same thing.
He was parked at his work lot with the hood up like that was going to help. I get it. You pop the hood when you feel stuck.
This is a classic Passlock failure on the GMT400-platform trucks. The sensor inside the ignition lock cylinder sends a resistance value to the body control module. When that sensor starts going bad, the reading drifts outside the learned range and the BCM kills the fuel injectors. The engine cranks fine because the starter circuit is separate, but nothing fires. Security light stays on solid for about 10 minutes, then the cycle resets.
I pulled the lower column covers, checked the three-wire Passlock harness coming off the lock cylinder, and ran the 10-minute relearn procedure to get the BCM to accept the current resistance value. Cranked and started on the first try after the relearn completed.
His key was fine the whole time. A perfectly cut B102 blade with no chip needed. The problem was a worn sensor giving inconsistent readings. I talked him through what to watch for if it happens again and how the relearn works so he would not be stranded a second time.
The dealer wanted to schedule him three days out and mentioned replacing the entire lock cylinder assembly. He drove home that afternoon.
