How the Lexus UX Key System Evolved
1st Generation (ZA10)
Lexus launched the UX with a 3-button smart proximity key using the HYQ14FBF fob and a Texas 4D transponder chip. That means your key talks to the SmartAccess immobilizer every time you walk up to the door or press the start button. We program these via OBD-II, PIN-free, right in your driveway.
1st Generation (ZA10) Update
Lexus stepped things up here with a 4-button smart key, adding a rear release button to the fob. Same Texas 4D chip, same HYQ14FBF FCC ID, same OBD-II programming method. The extra button is the only real change, but it means your 2021 fob is not interchangeable with the earlier 3-button version.
1st Generation (ZA10) Facelift
The 2022 facelift kept the 4-button smart key layout but introduced potential updates to the programming route. Some 2022 models may use a newer Toyota/Lexus authentication path. We verify your exact requirements before we roll out, so there are no surprises when we arrive in Simi Valley or wherever you are.
1st Generation (ZA10) Update: UX300h
Lexus rebadged the hybrid UX as the UX300h for 2023 and the fob moved to FCC ID HYQ14FLC. Your 2023 through 2026 UX still carries a 4-button smart proximity key with a TOY48 emergency blade and a CR2032 battery. Programming runs through Lexus server authentication, and we handle it on-site so you skip the dealer wait.
Which Key Does Your Lexus UX Use?
This is the standard smart proximity fob for early UX models. You never insert it anywhere; just keep it in your pocket and the car detects it automatically.
Same proximity system as the earlier fob, but with an added rear hatch release button. Your 2021 or 2022 UX uses this version, and it takes the same CR2032 battery.
The current UX300h smart key, FCC ID HYQ14FLC. Same 4-button proximity layout and TOY48 emergency blade as the prior fob, on a CR2032 cell. It is not interchangeable with the older HYQ14FBF version, so we confirm your exact fob before we cut and program.
What to Expect Price-Wise
Price includes the key blank, cutting, programming, and testing; no hidden fees.
EZ Car Keyz vs. the Dealer
Your insurance company does not care who programs the key, so why pay dealer markup and wait three days?
Common Lexus UX Key Problems
Key Fob Battery Drain
Constant proximity polling and ultra-wideband in the UX smart key are the culprits. The fob always listens, even on a kitchen counter in Oxnard. Burning CR2032 cells more than once a year, store the fob away or use a Faraday pouch.
Transponder Sync Failure
Swap the fob battery, get back in, engine will not start. Push-button just blinks. Hits 2019-2021 models when the swap caused the immobilizer to lose sync with the transponder. A quick OBD-II relearn fixes it on-site in about 15 minutes.
Proximity Sensor Interference
Owners assume the fob is dying when doors will not unlock on approach. Often RF interference from electronics, cell towers, or other ultra-wideband vehicles. Common near the Camarillo outlets. Occasional means interference, not a bad key.
Programming Lockout
We check ECU backup status first on a 2021 or 2022 UX. Attempt all-keys-lost programming without backing up the EEPROM and the ECU can lock permanently, turning a $350 job into $1,500. Autel IM608 with full backup protocols is standard.
Can You Program a Lexus UX Key Yourself?
No DIY self-programming procedure exists for the 2019-2020 UX. The SmartAccess immobilizer requires OBD-II diagnostic equipment and PIN extraction to register a new key, even if you already have a working one.
Same story as the earlier models. The 2021 UX uses the same advanced immobilizer system, and there is no key-in-ignition or door-lock sequence that will add a new fob. You need professional OBD-II tools.
The 2022 facelift did not change this. No customer-level programming is available. The immobilizer requires professional diagnostic access, and attempting it with cheap Amazon tools risks locking out the ECU entirely.

Did You Know?
Most people do not know this: the Lexus UX smart key system uses ultra wideband (UWB) technology for precise location tracking. Unlike older keyless entry systems that just check if the fob is nearby, UWB verifies the exact distance between the fob and the cabin. This was specifically designed to prevent relay attacks, where thieves use signal amplifiers to trick the car into thinking the key is close when it is actually inside your house.
