Somewhere in The Mesa, a woman bought a used 2019 Lexus UX from a private seller. One fob. She planned to get a spare cut eventually. That was two years ago.
She called me on a Tuesday afternoon. The fob housing had split along the seam, and when she tried to use the emergency blade to get in manually, it snapped off inside the door lock cylinder. So she was standing there with the fob body in one hand, the blade stuck in the door, and zero working keys for the car.
I got there and pulled the blade fragment out of the lock first, then decoded the cylinder. The fob housing was cracked but the circuit board and transponder chip inside were still intact. I transferred the board into a new shell rather than doing a full all-keys-lost reset, which saved a significant amount of time. Cut two replacement blades to match the decoded lock. Both fobs programmed and tested, every button on both, touch unlock on both door handles, and the push-to-start.
Forty-five minutes at the curb. She went from no working keys to two.
She mentioned the dealer had already quoted her a price that made her pause before even asking what it included. What she paid me was a good chunk less, and she didn't have to figure out how to tow a car she couldn't start anywhere.
