GX 470 (J120)
A traditional transponder key with a Texas 4D chip inside the head. You turn it in the ignition like any other key, but the immobilizer checks that chip before the engine fires. Three buttons on the fob, a high-security blade, and CR1616 battery. On-board programming keeps this generation straightforward for us to handle in your driveway.
GX 460 (J150)
This is where Lexus moved to a smart key with push-button start. Your GX 460 uses an ID46 chip and the Lexus Smart Key System, which means the fob stays in your pocket and the car detects it through proximity sensors. Four buttons, a laser-cut emergency blade, and CR2032 battery. Programming requires OBD-II tools like Techstream, so this one needs a professional, but we handle it on-site without a tow.
GX 550 (J250)
The newest GX runs on the GA-F platform shared with the Land Cruiser. It still uses an ID46 chip and a smart key with four buttons, but Lexus added server authentication to the programming process. That means dealer-level access is required for now. We will tell you that upfront and help you navigate the process so you do not overpay.

Transponder Chip Failure
Your 2003-2009 GX 470 cranks but will not fire, or starts and dies. The Texas 4D chip in the key head is failing. These chips wear out and the immobilizer kills the engine. We clone or replace the chip on-site, usually under 30 minutes.
Smart Key Battery Drain
Faulty fob circuitry on 2010-2023 GX 460 chews CR1632 cells in weeks. If batteries keep dying and push-button is intermittent, the board is the issue, not the cell. We test current draw first; bad board, we replace and program right there.
Immobilizer ECU Sync Loss
First check on a Simi Valley GX 460 that will not start after a battery swap: ECU sync. When the 12V dies or gets disconnected, the ECU can lose handshake with the smart keys. Not broken, just needs a Techstream relearn. About 20 minutes in your driveway.
Proximity Sensor Failure
Owners think the smart key died when a door-handle proximity sensor failed. Coastal humidity in Oxnard and Ventura accelerates it. Fob fine, battery fine, but the car cannot detect on handle grab. We diagnose sensor vs fob on-site.
Can You Program a Lexus GX Key Yourself?
Yes, if you have at least one working master key. The GX 470 supports a pedal dance procedure to add a new transponder key. It involves a specific sequence of brake and accelerator presses with precise timing. Remote programming is a separate procedure using the door cylinder cylinder. Neither method works for all-keys-lost situations.
No DIY method exists for the GX 460. The smart key system requires diagnostic tools like Techstream or an Autel IM608 for programming. This applies whether you are adding a spare or replacing all keys.
No DIY method and no standard locksmith method either. The GX 550 requires Lexus server authentication for key programming. This is a dealer-only job for now.
