Guy near Cachuma Lake Recreation Area called about his 2022 GX. Smart key worked fine yesterday, dead today. "Key Not Detected" on the dash.
I get there and he's already tried the CR2032 swap. Still nothing. These HYQ14FBF fobs have a known issue where the battery contact spring loses tension. Pop the fob, check the spring, and there it is: barely touching the battery.
Quick bend to restore contact pressure. Key wakes up, but now we hit the second problem. The GX won't recognize it. That's because pulling the battery for more than 30 seconds wipes the rolling code sync.
Out comes the Autel IM608. Through the OBD port, I run the Smart Key re-registration. Takes about three minutes for the system to accept the existing fob again. Test all four buttons: lock, unlock, panic, power hatch. Test the door handle sensors. Test push-to-start from inside the cabin and from the edge of range.
The dealer would have sold him a new fob for sure. Probably quoted the TSB about "intermittent Smart Key response" that came out for the 2021 model. But all this needed was a battery contact adjustment and a re-sync. Done in his driveway for way less than half what they wanted.
