I got a call from a woman parked over in Five Points, Oxnard. She had a 2008 Lexus GX and a key fob that had stopped locking the doors reliably. Range was down to about two feet, and sometimes the car threw a key-not-detected warning on the dash even with the key physically in range. She had already called the dealer. They wanted her to come in for a diagnosis appointment, then order the part, then come back for programming. She was looking at over a week without a reliable key, minimum.
She found me, and I was already running a route through Oxnard that morning, so I stopped by.
First thing I did was pop the key head open and check the battery. CR1616. Looked right. But when I pulled it out and checked the voltage with my meter, it was sitting low, not quite dead but not healthy either. I swapped it for a fresh CR1616, seated it clean, and retested. Range was back, but the key-not-detected warning was still showing up intermittently. That told me the battery wasn't the whole story.
She had a second key. I tested it. Same behavior. At that point it stopped being a hardware problem and started being a registration problem. One of the keys had gotten partially knocked out of the vehicle's memory, probably from a low-battery event that interrupted a communication cycle.
I connected through the OBD port, pulled up the vehicle security system, and re-registered both keys so the car had a clean record of both fobs. Tested every button on both. Lock, unlock, the third button. Walked around the car, checked the door handles, verified the dash warning was gone.
She asked me if I needed anything from her. I told her to go back inside and finish her errand. By the time she came back out, it was done.
That's the job. Not glamorous. But it doesn't need to be. It just needs to work.
