I was parked near the South Surfside neighborhood in Port Hueneme on a Tuesday when a call came in about a 2013 Lexus GX. Mom, two kids, after-school pickup starting in about an hour. Her smart key had stopped being detected by the driver door handle. Passenger side still worked, start button still saw the fob most of the time, but the driver handle had gone dead.
She had already called the dealer. They wanted her to bring it in, said they'd need to diagnose it, possibly order parts, and she was looking at multiple days minimum. With two kids in activities and one car in the family, that wasn't a workable answer.
I got to the parking lot and started where I always start: the fob itself. CR1632 was original, and it tested low. Swapped it, reseated it properly so the contacts sat flush, and walked the car. Passenger touch unlock, fine. Driver touch unlock, still nothing.
So the fob was fine. The driver door handle sensor was the actual problem. I let her know what I was seeing and explained the difference between a key issue and a vehicle-side issue. She appreciated that I wasn't just trying to sell her a new fob she didn't need.
We scheduled the fob she actually did need made at the same time, because she'd been running on one key for months and wanted a spare while I was already there. Programmed the second fob on-site, tested every button and both door handles, and she had a working spare before pickup time.
The dealer would have taken days just to get her in the door. I was there and done the same afternoon.
