First Generation NX
Lexus launched the NX with a full smart key system right out of the gate. Your 2015 through 2017 NX uses a 4-button proximity fob with an ID46 transponder chip, FCC ID HYQ14FBA, and a laser-cut emergency blade tucked inside. Programming requires a scan tool connected to your OBD-II port, so there is no shortcut or DIY method for this one.
First Gen Extended
Lexus kept the same smart key platform here but opened up an additional programming path. Your 2018 through 2020 NX still runs the HYQ14FBA fob with an ID46 chip, but it can also be programmed using a Pro Keybox kit if a working key is present. Same 4 buttons, same CR2032 battery, same laser-cut blade. The security architecture did not change, just the tooling options.
Second Generation Redesign
This is where the NX got a full redesign. The smart key system was updated with enhanced security features, though it still uses a 4-button proximity fob with a CR2032 battery and laser-cut emergency blade. Programming on these years can be handled on-board in most cases, but some configurations may require dealer involvement depending on the specific security module.
Current Generation
The newest NX models may use server-based authentication for key programming. That means the car phones home to Lexus before it accepts a new key. We can handle many of these on-site, but we will verify your specific VIN before we roll out. If yours needs dealer server access, we tell you upfront so you are not paying for a trip that cannot get finished.
Which Key Does Your Lexus NX Use?
This is the rectangular black fob with the Lexus logo. You never put it in the ignition. Just keep it in your pocket and the car detects it when you grab the door handle or press the start button.
Same proximity concept as the earlier NX, but with an updated antenna design and enhanced security module. The fob looks similar but the internals are generation-specific, so a 2015 fob will not work in a 2022.
The latest NX smart key. Same push-button start and proximity entry you are used to, but the programming process may involve server authentication on the back end. Your fob still uses a CR2032 battery and has an emergency blade for dead-battery situations.

Smart Key Fob Battery Depletion
The CR2032 in NX fob runs three to four years. Once it fades, the signal weakens and the car detects the fob inconsistently. Swap the cell yourself for a couple bucks. Fresh CR2032 and nothing, the electronics may be done and you need a replacement programmed.
Transponder Programming Failures with Aftermarket Tools
Buttons not responding, car will not start, fob only working pressed against the start button. Signature of consumer-grade kit programming. Pro Keybox method on 2015-2020 NX is sensitive to fob placement. Autel IM608 and VVDI handle the handshake.
Smart Entry System Sensor Malfunction
NX owners think the fob is dead when a proximity sensor in the handle or dash failed. Battery tests fine, buttons light, but the car will not detect for keyless entry or push-button. We diagnose through OBD-II to confirm fob vs sensor.
Immobilizer System Server Authentication (2025+)
We check this before leaving for your location. The 2025-2026 NX may require server-based authentication for key programming. If your VIN demands dealer-only server access, we tell you on the phone so you do not pay for a service call that cannot be completed.
Can You Program a Lexus NX Key Yourself?
No self-programming option exists for these years. Your NX requires a professional scan tool connected to the OBD-II port to register a new smart key to the immobilizer.
Same deal here. Even though a Pro Keybox kit exists for these years, it still requires professional-level equipment and a working key present. There is no button sequence or ignition trick that programs a new fob.
The redesigned NX uses an updated smart entry system that requires diagnostic tools for key registration. No DIY method available.
