Over in the Oaks Mall area in Thousand Oaks, I got a call from a woman who had owned her 2019 Lexus NX for about two years before she hit the wall most single-fob owners eventually hit.
She had bought it from a private seller and got exactly one key. She kept meaning to get a spare made. Then the fob housing cracked along the side seam, probably from being dropped a few times, and when she tried to use the emergency blade to get in manually, it snapped in the lock. That was it. Fob shell in pieces, blade stuck in the door lock cylinder, zero working keys, standing in a parking lot near the mall.
I drove out to her. First order of business was the blade fragment. Once I extracted that and decoded the lock cylinder, I could cut a working mechanical key. Then I opened what was left of the cracked fob housing. The internal board was intact. The transponder chip had survived every drop that destroyed the shell. That mattered a lot because it meant I could transfer the original components into a fresh fob shell and pair it properly, no full all-keys-lost reset required. I showed her the board so she could see what I was working with.
She went from no keys to two working keys in about 45 minutes. If the board had been cracked too, the job would have taken longer and cost more. The dealer, who she had already called out of panic, wanted significantly more and couldn't see her for several days. She was back in her car before lunch.
