How Lexus IS Keys Changed Over 20+ Years
First Generation (GXE10/SXE10)
This is where security got serious for Lexus sport sedans, but the key itself stayed simple. Your first gen IS300 uses a mechanical key with a transponder chip in the head. No buttons on the key, no remote fob battery to worry about. You turn it in the ignition and the chip talks to the ECU to verify it is the right key before the engine fires.
Second Generation (XE20)
Lexus stepped things up here with a proper transponder key fob. Your second gen IS250 or IS350 has a 3-button remote head key with a standard blade and a CR1632 battery inside. The immobilizer system is more advanced than the first gen, which means programming requires professional diagnostic tools. No push-button start yet; you still insert the key and turn.
Third Generation (XE30) Pre-Facelift
This is where the IS went fully modern. Your 2013-2017 IS uses a 4-button smart proximity key with push-button start and a laser-cut emergency blade tucked inside the fob. The advanced Lexus immobilizer means the car recognizes the fob in your pocket and lets you walk up, open the door, and press a button to start. Programming requires professional equipment; there is no DIY path here.
Third Generation (XE30) Facelift 1
Same smart key platform as the pre-facelift, but Lexus refreshed the lineup with the IS300 turbo replacing the IS200t. Your 2017-2021 IS still uses a 4-button smart key with a CR2032 battery and laser-cut emergency blade. The immobilizer architecture carried over, so programming requirements are identical to the 2013-2017 models.
Third Generation (XE30) Facelift 2
The final refresh of the XE30 platform kept the same smart key system. Your 2021 or 2022 IS300 or IS350 uses the same 4-button proximity fob, CR2032 battery, and laser-cut blade as the earlier third gen models. The advanced immobilizer still requires professional programming, and we handle it on-site with the same tools and process.
Third Generation (XE30) Late Production
The XE30 IS soldiers on through 2026 with the same smart key architecture, now using the HYQ14FLB proximity fob. Your 2023 through 2026 IS300, IS350, or IS500 F SPORT Performance carries a 4-button smart key on a CR2032 cell with a laser-cut emergency blade. Programming runs through Lexus server authentication, so it stays a professional job, and we handle it on-site.
Which Key Does Your Lexus IS Use?
A traditional metal key with a transponder chip embedded in the head. No buttons, no battery. You insert it into the ignition and turn to start.
A key with built-in remote buttons for lock, unlock, and trunk. You still insert it into the ignition, but the fob also controls your doors from a distance.
A slim fob that stays in your pocket. The car detects it when you walk up, unlocks the doors, and lets you start with a push button. A hidden laser-cut blade inside gets you in if the battery dies.
Same smart key design as the 2013-2017 models. Four buttons, push-button start, and a laser-cut emergency blade tucked inside the fob.
The latest IS smart key. Identical form factor to the earlier third gen fobs with proximity entry, push-button start, and an emergency blade for backup.
The current IS smart key, FCC ID HYQ14FLB. Same proximity entry and push-button start as the earlier third gen fobs, with a laser-cut emergency blade inside and a CR2032 battery. New keys pair through Lexus server authentication.

Common Lexus IS Key Problems
Smart Key Battery Depletion (2013+)
The CR2032 in third-gen IS smart keys causes most proximity entry and push-button failures. Not the immobilizer, not a broken fob. A $4 battery dies every 12-18 months. Pop the fob, swap positive up. Stuck in Camarillo? (805) 790-8162.
Transponder Programming Failures (2005-2012)
We check the programming attempt count first on second-gen IS. The XE20 immobilizer locks out after too many failed attempts; only a dealer reset clears it. If someone failed on your IS250, our diagnostic scan shows it. We use Tango and Autel IM608 first time.
Smart Key Proximity Sensor Malfunction (2013+)
Walk up to IS350 in a Simi Valley grocery lot and the door will not unlock, fob in pocket. RF interference from nearby electronics or cell towers, not a dead fob. Hold the key against the handle. If it works, fob is fine, proximity range is being disrupted.
Immobilizer System Lock-Out (All Years)
People assume dead battery or bad starter when the engine cranks but will not fire. Often it is an immobilizer lockout from failed programming or an unrecognized key. First-gen IS allows few attempts. We diagnose curbside and usually reset without a tow.
Can You Program a Lexus IS Key Yourself?
If you have at least one working master key, the first gen IS supports a pedal-based self-programming procedure to add a new transponder key. There is also a separate door cylinder cycle method for programming remotes. Both require precise timing, and if you mess up the sequence, you may trigger an immobilizer lockout.
No DIY programming is possible on the second gen IS. The advanced immobilizer requires Techstream, Autel, or equivalent professional diagnostic tools to register a new transponder key to the ECU.
All third gen IS models with smart proximity keys require professional diagnostic equipment for programming. There is no self-programming procedure for any 2013-2022 IS, regardless of trim level.

Did You Know?
Most people do not know this: the Lexus IS lineage traces back to the 1998 Toyota Altezza, sold exclusively in Japan as the AS200 and RS200 before Lexus brought it to global markets as the IS200 and IS300 in 2001. That makes the IS one of Lexus's longest-running sport sedan platforms, with roots in a car that became a JDM legend in its own right.
