In Ventura, over in the College area, a woman called me about a 2015 Lexus IS. She had bought it used a couple years back with one fob. One. Meant to get a spare cut, never did, and then the fob housing cracked along the seam -- that stress point where the two halves meet near the blade release.
She tried to use the emergency blade for manual entry and it snapped off in the lock cylinder. So she was standing in a parking lot at her condo with the fob housing in one hand, the top half of the blade stuck inside her door lock, and zero working keys to the car.
First thing I did was extract the blade fragment from the lock -- careful work, not a race. Then I decoded the lock and confirmed the cut. The chip inside the broken fob housing was still intact and readable, which mattered. Because the original fob's electronics survived the cracked shell, I could work with what was there rather than treating it as an all-keys-lost situation. That distinction saves real time.
I transferred the working internals into a new fob shell, cut two fresh emergency blades, and verified every button on the new assembly. Then I walked both doors, tested the handle touch unlock on each, and ran the start sequence so she could watch the car recognize the fob normally before I packed up.
She went from zero keys to two working fobs in under an hour. And she said the dealer had already quoted her a number that made her stomach drop -- she called me before she committed to that. Good instinct.
If your fob is cracked or broken, do not throw it away before you call. The chip inside may still be good, and that changes the job entirely.
