2003 Lexus IS Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Out near Rustic Canyon Golf Course in Moorpark, a guy flagged me down in the parking area. He had a 2003 Lexus IS300, sitting there with the hood still warm. Engine would crank, catch for about two seconds, then die. Classic immobilizer kill.
He told me another locksmith had already come out, cut a new HYQ1512V remote head key, charged him full price, and left. The key turned the ignition, the remote buttons locked and unlocked the doors, and the locksmith called it done. But the car never actually ran for more than that two-second crank-and-die. The other tech told him his smart ECU was probably fried and that he should tow it to Lexus.
The ECU was fine. I pulled up diagnostics through the OBD port and could see the 4D-68 transponder ID was present but not committed to the immobilizer's permanent key memory. The previous locksmith had started the registration but never completed the timed security sequence. On these first-gen IS300 immobilizer systems, the 89780-series ECU requires a full seed/key calculation and a wait period before the transponder is accepted into long-term storage. Rush it or disconnect early and the chip looks registered until the next ignition cycle wipes it.
I used my Lishi TOY48 to verify the blade cut matched the wafers. Clean. Then I cleared the half-written registration, ran a fresh 4D-68 program cycle with the full security timer, and waited it out. Three consecutive start tests, all clean. I showed him the confirmation screen on my IM608 so he could see the key ID stored in permanent memory.
He had already paid someone else for a key that never worked. I made sure this one did.
