I was out in Peach Hill, Moorpark, on a call that started with a familiar story. The owner of a 2003 Lexus IS told me someone had already tried to make him a key. Paid for the whole job. The key would crank the engine, run for about two seconds, and then die. Every time.
The previous guy had blamed the immobilizer module. Said it was faulty and walked. The car had been sitting for a couple of weeks.
I've seen this before on this generation. The engine cranking and then cutting out is the immobilizer doing exactly what it's supposed to do when a key isn't fully registered. The module was fine. What had happened was the registration sequence got cut short. On this system, there's a timed security window during the write process. If you disconnect too early or rush past it, the key data gets written temporarily and then doesn't commit to permanent memory. The immobilizer sees the key on crank, starts the car, then rejects it once it rechecks registration. Two-second start is almost a signature of that specific mistake.
I cleared the incomplete registration through the OBD port, let the security timer run its full cycle without touching anything, and re-enrolled the key properly. Then I sat there and ran three consecutive cold start tests before I called it done.
He'd already paid one guy for a job that wasn't finished. He wasn't going to hear from me until I was certain. Dealer would have had him tow the car in and wait days for a service slot, for a fraction of what that would have cost him. He was driving the same afternoon.
