2001 Lexus IS
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Can you wipe lost or stolen keys from my Lexus so they no longer work?

Yes. A security reset clears all previously enrolled keys from the vehicle's immobilizer and registers only the new ones you authorize. After that process, any key that went missing won't start the car or communicate with the locks. It's the same outcome the dealer produces when they do a full re-enrollment. We can do it on site in Moorpark Home Acres without a tow.

Q: Does the 2001 Lexus IS remote head key have a hidden emergency blade?

On the 2001 IS, the remote head key is a combined unit where the blade is fixed and integrated into the fob body rather than folded away. The blade is always out. There's no hidden insert key to extract. This means if the fob housing breaks or the blade wears down, you're dealing with the whole unit at once.

Q: My 2001 Lexus IS starts fine but the remote buttons stopped working. Do I need a whole new key?

Not necessarily. On these remote head keys, the ignition and the remote functions are in the same unit but they don't always fail together. First thing to check is the CR1616 battery. It's a thin cell and easy to overlook because the car still starts even when it's nearly dead. A weak battery will kill the remote range and button response well before it affects ignition.

Q: I bought a replacement remote head key online for my 2001 Lexus IS. Can I program it myself?

No. This isn't one of those older setups where you cycle the ignition a few times and call it done. Programming a new key on the 2001 IS requires diagnostic equipment connected to the vehicle. The online key needs to be enrolled by a tech with the right tool before it will do anything. Bring the uncut, unprogrammed key to us and we can cut the blade and handle the full enrollment on site in Moorpark Home Acres.

2001 Lexus IS Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Moorpark Home Acres, I got a call from a woman who'd done her homework before picking up the phone. She'd looked up my BSIS license, LCO#6792, confirmed it active on the state website, and only then dialed.

She told me her last experience with a locksmith had gone badly. No company name on the receipt, no license number, a phone number that disconnected a few days later. She wasn't doing that again.

She needed a spare key for her 2001 Lexus IS. The original remote head key still worked, but she'd been driving around with a single key for two years and finally decided that wasn't smart.

I pulled up to her driveway in the van. She was already outside, which tells you something about how long she'd been waiting to get this handled. I cut the replacement blade to match her existing key and programmed the new remote head key on site using my diagnostic equipment. The whole job was done before she had to go back inside.

When I handed her the new key, she tested every button herself, tried the ignition twice, and then asked what she owed. When I told her, she said the dealer had quoted her something she described as "not reasonable." I don't know exactly what number they gave her, but she made it clear she felt like she'd saved a significant amount coming through me instead.

I gave her a receipt with my license number, my phone number, and my company name on it. Same ones you can verify right now.

Lexus IS Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to handle all-keys-lost on my 2001 Lexus IS?▼

Call a mobile locksmith before you call the dealer or a tow truck. All-keys-lost on this generation of Lexus typically means a security system reset at the diagnostic port, followed by cutting and programming new remote head keys. Dealers have to schedule it, and the quote usually includes shop fees and labor on top of parts.
