2005 Lexus IS
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a remote head key and why does it matter for replacement?

A remote head key is a single unit where the key blade, the transponder chip, and the lock/unlock buttons all live in one molded housing. Your 2005 Lexus IS uses this setup with three buttons built into the head.

Q: My Lexus shows a key warning and won't respond to the fob. What should I check first?

Start with the CR1616. It's a thinner cell and not one most people stock at home, so a lot of owners go a long time on a battery that's technically dead. Swap in a fresh name-brand CR1616 and test both range and button response before assuming the key or the car has a deeper problem. If the battery swap doesn't change anything, try holding the key head directly against the ignition cylinder while you turn.

Q: I bought a replacement remote head key online. Can you just program it, or do I need to buy the key from you?

You can bring your own key and I'll program it, as long as it's the right part for the 2005 IS and the factory FCC ID on the fob matches what the vehicle expects. A lot of the aftermarket units floating around online are listed as compatible but aren't identical to the original, and that creates problems with the remote pairing, the blade profile, or both. If the key you bought is correct, programming it on site is no problem.

Q: Can I program a second key myself, or does it always need a technician?

On the 2005 IS, adding a key to the system requires professional programming equipment. There's no ignition-turn sequence or button trick that registers a new remote head key on this vehicle. The transponder side especially needs a proper tool to write to the immobilizer. So if you bought a key hoping to self-program it, you're still going to need someone with the right equipment to finish the job. That said, it's not a complicated call.

2005 Lexus IS Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was working the Moorpark College Area on a Tuesday morning when the call came in.

Guy had a 2005 Lexus IS, single key left, and the lock and unlock buttons had gotten unreliable enough that he was starting to not trust the key at all. His concern wasn't being locked out today. It was not wanting to find out what happens when you lose your only key and have to call someone from a parking lot.

He'd found me through YouTube, which I hear a lot. He mentioned he'd watched a Lexus remote head key replacement before picking up the phone, just to see what the actual process looked like. By the time I pulled up, he already knew roughly what was coming.

The original key was worn but still functional on the ignition side. The remote had just gotten flaky over the years, the kind of gradual fade you almost don't notice until one click out of four doesn't work. We did a fresh CR1616, confirmed that bought back some range, then went ahead and cut and programmed a backup key so he had two working units.

I tested every button on both keys, did multiple start cycles, and walked the locks on every door. Whole job, done on site, parked in front of his place. He mentioned the dealer quoted him considerably more and had told him to plan on leaving the car for most of a day. Neither of those things happened here.

Lexus IS Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

My key broke in the ignition. Can you get it out?▼

Yes. The 2005 IS uses a conventional ignition cylinder, so a broken key blade is a standard extraction job. I work the piece out without pulling or damaging the cylinder, then decode the lock or pull the key code from your door lock to cut a replacement blade that matches factory spec. You end up with a fresh key, not a worn-down copy of a worn-down original.
