Got a call from a guy near Tierra Rejada Golf Club in Moorpark. His 2002 IS300 had one key left and the blade was starting to twist at the neck. He'd been nursing it for months, turning it gently in the ignition like he was defusing something.
He told me he called the Lexus dealer first. They wanted him to tow it in, leave it for a day or two, and order the key through parts. The blank alone, Lexus part number 89070-33470, was going to run him a good chunk before labor and programming. He said the wait was the real problem. Only key, daily driver, no backup plan.
I showed up with my Smart Pro and a quality aftermarket HYQ1512V blank with the 4D-68 chip already in it. Cut the TOY48 blade to code on my mobile unit, then connected to the OBD-II port to register the new transponder to his ECU. The IS300 uses the standard Toyota/Lexus 4D registration procedure, so the handshake went clean on the first pass.
Tested ignition start, tested all three buttons, lock, unlock, panic. Then I handed him the old twisted key back and told him to keep it in a drawer at home as a spare transponder, just not to force it into anything.
He kept picking up the new key and looking at it like he forgot what a straight blade was supposed to look like.
Whole thing took about 25 minutes in his driveway. A fraction of what the dealer quoted, no tow, no waiting.
