My key broke in the ignition. Can you get it out?

The 2011 IS uses a push-button start, so there is no key going into the ignition cylinder for normal starting. The emergency blade that folds inside the smart fob is used for the door lock only. If that blade snapped off in the door lock, yes, we can extract it. We remove the broken piece without trashing the lock, then decode the lock cylinder or pull the key code from vehicle records and cut a new blade that fits correctly. No guessing, no filing, no "close enough."

What exactly is a smart key and how does it work on the 2011 Lexus IS?

The smart key is the fob your IS uses to lock, unlock, and start the car. It communicates with the vehicle's security system wirelessly, so as long as the fob is on your person, the door handles recognize it when you touch them and the start button will fire the engine. There is also a transponder chip inside the fob that the vehicle reads independently as a theft deterrent.

The fob has four buttons. There is also a mechanical blade folded inside for the door lock in situations where the fob battery is dead or the vehicle's receiver is not responding.

If the fob housing cracks or a button stops registering, the chip inside may still be perfectly fine, but a damaged fob is worth replacing before it leaves you stranded somewhere. A fob that partially works tends to fail completely at the worst time.

My Lexus IS shows a key-not-detected warning. What do I do?

First move: press the fob directly against the start button and try to start the car. On this system, the vehicle can power the transponder through the button itself when the fob battery is too weak to transmit normally. If that works, swap the CR1632 right away. Use a name brand cell and make sure it seats flat with no bent contact clips.

If holding the fob to the button does nothing, the problem is either the fob itself or something on the vehicle side receiving the signal. Some IS owners have found the smart key function had been toggled off in the vehicle settings menu, which sounds unlikely but is worth checking before assuming the fob is dead. If the settings look fine and the fob-to-button trick still gets no response, that points to the fob needing replacement and reprogramming rather than a simple battery fix.

I bought a replacement fob online. Can I program it myself?

No. The 2011 IS smart key has no self-programming sequence. There is no ignition-turn trick, no button combination, nothing like that. Registering a new fob to this vehicle requires a diagnostic tool that communicates with the vehicle's security system through the OBD port. If you have the fob in hand already, bring it along when you call. We can pair it as long as it is the correct fob for this vehicle. You will not need to buy another one.

Only one door handle is detecting my fob. The other side stopped working. Is the key the problem?

Probably not the key. If the start button still recognizes the fob and at least one handle responds, the fob is doing its job. Touch unlock on these uses sensors built into each door handle, and those sensors can fail or get confused by moisture and dirt buildup around the handle recess. Wipe the handle area down and retest. If it stays isolated to one door across multiple tries, the issue is almost certainly at the door handle sensor or that door's wiring, not the fob. This is a known enough complaint on IS models this age that it is worth ruling out before spending anything on the key side.
