How the Lexus SC Key System Changed Over the Years
SC400: Texas 4C Transponder
On-board programming makes this one straightforward. Your SC400 uses a Texas 4C (ID33) transponder chip with a standard blade and no remote buttons. It is a simple key by modern standards, but the immobilizer still needs professional tools to pair the chip to your ECU.
SC430 Transition Year
On-board programming still applies here, with the same Texas 4C (ID33) chip as the earlier SC400. The key looks nearly identical, but this year introduced the SC430 badge and a CR2032 battery for the separate remote fob. Think of it as the bridge between old school and what came next.
SC430: Remote Head Key with ID47
Lexus jumped to a completely new platform and a much more serious key. Your SC430 now uses an ID47 transponder chip inside a 3-button remote head key with a high-security blade. Programming requires OBD-II access, which means plugging into your car's diagnostic port. No more simple on-board procedures.
SC430: Refined Remote Head Key
The 2006-2010 SC430 carried over the 3-button remote head key with a Texas 4D (4D68) chip and high-security blade. There is no push-button start or proximity entry; the SC430 never adopted Smart Access. Programming requires OBD-II tools, and the fob uses a CR1616 battery. We carry the Toyota Techstream access needed to register these keys, so we handle it on-site without a tow to the dealer.
Which Key Does Your Lexus SC Use?
A metal key with a transponder chip inside the head. No buttons, no remote. You turn it in the ignition and the chip talks to your immobilizer.
Same style transponder key as the earlier SC400, but the separate keychain remote uses a CR1616 battery for lock and unlock.
The key and remote are built into one unit. Three buttons on the fob, a high-security blade that requires a precision cutter, and a CR1616 battery inside.
A 3-button remote head key with the lock, unlock, and trunk buttons built into the head. You turn the high-security blade in the ignition like a traditional key; there is no push-button start on the SC430. The fob runs on a CR1616 battery.

Common Lexus SC Key Problems
Transponder Chip Failure
People assume the ignition is failing when their 1998-2001 SC will not start. Usually it is the Texas 4C transponder chip degrading inside the key head. The chips are two decades old and wear. We test first; dead, we cut and program fresh.
Remote Head Key Battery Drain
First check on a 2006-2010 SC430 with a dead fob: swap the CR1616. Buttons stop responding as the battery weakens. Drop a fresh CR1616 from any drugstore. The SC430 has no proximity, so a dead fob does not block starting the car, only unlocking with buttons.
High Security Blade Wear
High-security blades on 2002+ SC430s wear faster than standard keys. Cuts are precise and shallow, so minor rounding causes the key to jam or stick. We duplicate with a Futura precision cutter, not a standard machine, so copies last.
Immobilizer ECU Sync Loss
SC will not start after a battery swap, security light flashing. Not a dead key; ECU lost sync with the transponder. Hits every SC year 1998-2010. Two paired keys can reset older models; otherwise Autel IM608 via OBD-II. Common in Oxnard and Camarillo.
Can You Program a Lexus SC Key Yourself?
No self-programming option exists for this generation. The Texas 4C chip needs professional tools to pair with the Toyota Type 1 Immobilizer.
Same situation as the earlier SC400. On-board programming requires locksmith-grade equipment, not a DIY procedure you can do at home.
The ID47 chip and Engine ECU Immobilizer require OBD-II programming with professional tools like Techstream or our Autel IM608. No DIY shortcut here.
The smart key system requires OBD-II programming, and 2008 and newer models also need Toyota server authentication. This is strictly a professional job.
