I got a call from a guy parked near the Westside, off one of the surface streets that runs toward the Mesa. He had snapped his key in the ignition of his 2006 Lexus SC. Clean break. Half the blade was still seated in the cylinder, and he was standing there holding the other half with the fob head still attached, wondering if he had just totaled his morning.
He had already called a shop. Their opening number was for a full ignition replacement, new cylinder, new keys, the whole teardown. He said it like he was still trying to process it.
I drove out, pulled the broken fragment using a pick and extractor set, working slow so I did not touch the wafer surfaces. Once the fragment was out clean, I decoded the lock from the cylinder itself, cut a new blade to match, and programmed the transponder through the OBD port. Tested the remote functions. Tested the start. Locked and unlocked from outside. The original cylinder felt exactly the same as the day it left the factory.
He kept looking at the ignition like he expected something to be different. Nothing was. That is the whole point.
The other shop's approach would have changed the car. Mine did not. He paid a fraction of what they quoted, and he drove off on his original hardware.
