I cleaned the contacts, corrected the bow, and seated a fresh CR1616.
After that I ran through the full remote function check at the car, both doors, the trunk, and the panic. Everything came back clean. The programming itself was fine. The previous tech had done that part correctly. The whole issue was a bent battery contact from a sloppy open.
He'd been told he needed a full replacement fob. He didn't. The job took about twenty minutes, and he saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer had quoted him for a new key unit.
