Downtown Santa Barbara is a mix of condos and street parking, and when someone there loses their only key, there is no backup plan. That was the exact situation I pulled up to one afternoon off State Street.
The owner had bought the SC used, one fob, always meant to get a spare cut. Then the fob housing split at the seam, and the blade snapped when she tried the manual lock entry. She was standing there with the two halves of the housing in her hand and the blade tip still stuck in the door cylinder. Zero working keys, no way in, no way to drive.
First thing I did was extract the broken blade from the cylinder. Then I split the cracked housing the rest of the way open. The board and the transponder chip inside were intact. Chip still read clean. That mattered because it meant I could skip a full all-keys-lost reset. I transferred the original chip and board into a new shell, got the blade fragment out without damaging the cylinder, decoded the lock, and cut two fresh blades.
Total time, about 45 minutes. She went from no keys at all to two working keys with the remote functions tested before I packed up.
She mentioned she'd called the dealer earlier that week. They quoted her a number for a single key, before towing, before any labor on the cylinder. Coming out to her in Downtown Santa Barbara cost her a fraction of that.
