How the CT Key System Evolved
AE10 (1st Gen)
OBD-II programming with server authentication makes this one straightforward for us, though impossible for DIY. Your CT uses a 3-button smart key with a Texas 4D (ID47) transponder chip and push-button start. We read the PIN through the OBD port, program the new key, and cut the high-security emergency blade right in your driveway.
AE10 (1st Gen Facelift)
OBD-II plus server auth is still the method here, same as the earlier years. Lexus gave the CT a cosmetic refresh but kept the same Texas 4D (ID47) chip, CR1632 battery, and Type 6 immobilizer under the hood. The key system is identical, so if you have had a 2012 done before, the 2014 and 2015 work exactly the same way.
AE10 (1st Gen Final)
Server authentication is required on these final production years, and we handle it with the Autel IM608 for server bypass. Same Texas 4D (ID47) chip, same 3-button smart key, same high-security blade. Lexus did not change the key system for the CT's last two years in the US market, which means we have this one dialed in.
Which Key Does Your CT Use?
This is the only key type for your CT. It stays in your pocket or bag, unlocks the doors when you grab the handle, and starts the car with the push button. The hidden metal blade folds out for emergencies.
Same smart key as the earlier CT. Three buttons: lock, unlock, and trunk. The fob communicates wirelessly with your car, so you never insert it anywhere during normal use.
Identical smart key through the final model year. If your fob looks like a small black rectangle with the Lexus logo and a fold-out metal key inside, that is the one.
How Much Does a Lexus CT Key Cost?
Price includes the key blank, high-security blade cutting, OBD-II programming with server authentication, and testing; no hidden fees.

Common Lexus CT Key Problems
Smart Key Fob Battery Drain
CT owners blame a defective fob when proximity polling drains CR1632 cells faster than expected. Two-month life on this model is normal; under two weeks points at internal circuit failure. We test on the spot.
Transponder Recognition Failure
First check is the 12V battery. A brief low-voltage event can scramble the Type 6 immobilizer into forgetting the key's transponder. Common in Oxnard and Camarillo after cars sit. If 12V passes, the ECU needs a key relearn through OBD, handled curbside.
Push Button Start Intermittent
On 2011-2014 CTs, the start button can stop with a fresh fob battery. Usually the antenna module behind the dash or an ECM glitch. Try the dead-fob start: hold the Lexus logo side against the start button and press. Fires, the antenna is failing.
Key Blade Wear
Most CT owners never use the emergency blade and assume it is fine. The high-security blade wears from being carried, and when the fob dies in a Thousand Oaks garage, a worn blade will not turn the cylinder. We cut new on-site with a Lexus code machine.
Can You Program a CT Key Yourself?
No self-programming procedure exists for any CT 200h. The Lexus Type 6 immobilizer requires OBD-II tools with server authentication to register a new key. You need professional equipment for this one.
Same system as the earlier years. No onboard programming, no DIY workaround. The transponder locks to your VIN through server auth, which requires tools like the Autel IM608 or Toyota Techstream.
Still no self-programming on the final CT years. If you see a listing online claiming a "self-programmable" CT key, that is a scam. Call us at (805) 790-8162 and we will get it done right.

Did You Know?
Back in 2011, Lexus did something no other luxury brand had tried: they launched the CT 200h as the first luxury hybrid hatchback in the US market. It shared its hybrid platform with the humble Toyota Prius c, but Lexus gave it their advanced smart key system borrowed from higher-end models like the IS and GS. A compact hatchback with the same keyless entry tech as a $60,000 sedan.
