Q: How long will a replacement key last?

The programming doesn't wear out. Once a fob is enrolled in your CT's system, it stays enrolled. What actually wears over time is the CR1632 battery, usually every two to four years depending on how often you're near the car, and the rubber button pads, which can get soft or unresponsive with daily use. We put a fresh battery in with every key we make.

Q: What if the new key stops working after a few weeks?

Call us. Our work is covered. That said, if a freshly programmed fob goes erratic on a Lexus, the first thing worth checking is a vehicle-side setting. Some Lexus owners have found that a configuration option in the vehicle's settings menu can affect how the smart key system behaves, and it can get toggled without the owner realizing it. It's not the key. It's the car telling the key to behave differently.

Q: My CT shows a key-not-detected warning but the fob battery is new. What's going on?

This is one of the more common complaints CT owners post about. A fresh battery doesn't always fix it if the battery isn't seated correctly or the contact inside the fob has a slight bend from being pried open wrong. That warning can also appear if the fob's internal board got moisture in it, which happens when the seam on an older housing starts to separate. The other possibility is interference.

Q: I only have one key for my CT. Can you add a second without losing the first?

Yes. That's actually the better situation to be in. When at least one working key is present, I can add a second fob into the system alongside it. Both stay active. The all-keys-lost scenario, where every registered fob is gone, takes longer and involves a full system reset that erases everything before re-enrolling. One working key means we skip that step entirely. Get the spare made now while it's the easier job.

2016 Lexus CT Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

In Ventura, over in the Thille/Montalvo area, I got a call from a parent who was already frustrated before she dialed.

She had one working smart key for her 2016 Lexus CT. She'd lost the other one months earlier and kept meaning to get a spare made.
