XF20: Transponder Key Era
OBD-II programming makes this generation straightforward for us. Your LS400 uses an ID33 transponder chip embedded in a high-security blade key. No remote buttons, no push-button start. You turn it in the ignition like a traditional key, but the chip has to match the immobilizer or the engine won't fire.
XF30: Remote Head Key
On-board programming makes this one the most accessible of the bunch. Your LS430 uses a 4D68 chip inside a 3-button remote head key with a high-security blade and a CR1616 battery. The remote handles lock, unlock, and trunk, while the transponder talks to the engine ECU immobilizer. A pin code is required for programming, which we pull on-site.
XF40: Smart Key and Push-Button Start
This is where Lexus security got serious. Your LS460 or LS460L uses a proximity smart key with a Texas 4D (4D67) chip, a laser-cut emergency blade, and a CR1632 battery. Walk up, press the button, drive. Programming requires OBD-II access plus server authentication on most model years, which means professional tools and the right software subscriptions.
XF50: Dealer-Level Security
Lexus locked this generation down with a Security Gateway Module. Your LS500 uses an ID47 chip inside a smart key with a laser-cut blade and CR2032 battery. Server authentication through Lexus Techstream is required for key programming, and we will tell you that upfront. We can still help with lockouts, battery replacements, and diagnostics, but new key programming on the XF50 needs dealer tools.
XF50: Current LS500 Smart Key
The LS500 carries on through 2026 on the XF50 platform, and we program these on-site. Your 2021 through 2026 LS500 uses a 4-button proximity smart key, FCC ID HYQ14FLC on the latest builds, with a laser-cut emergency blade and a CR2032 battery. The Texas H-8A transponder pairs through authenticated programming, which we carry on every call, so no dealer handoff for a fresh key.
Which Key Does Your Lexus LS Use?
A metal key with a chip inside the head. No buttons, no remote. It looks simple but the transponder has to be programmed to your LS400's immobilizer or the car won't start.
Your key has three buttons built into the head for lock, unlock, and trunk. The blade still goes in the ignition, and the 4D68 chip inside handles immobilizer communication.

Smart Key Battery Drain
LS460 owners think the smart key is failing when it is slow battery drain. The proximity sensor in XF40 fobs (2007-2017) pulls power even on a counter. Shrinking range or sluggish recognition points at the CR1632. We carry cells and test on-site.
Transponder Chip Failure
First check on a 2001-2010 LS that cranks but will not start: the transponder signal. 4D68 chips in XF30 remote head keys fail intermittently, especially after years in a Simi Valley glove box. We read on-site; dead, clone or replace.
Immobilizer ECU Sync Loss
Car battery dies, jump or replace, key will not start the car. That is ECU sync loss. The immobilizer lost handshake during power interruption. Hits every LS generation 1997-2020. Diagnostic scan and relearn gets key and ECU talking.
Laser Blade Wear
People blame the smart fob when the door cylinder will not accept the emergency blade. On high-mileage XF40 and XF50, the laser-cut blade wears and aftermarket blades are often cut wrong. We cut OEM-spec on-site to match your lock.
Can You Program a Lexus LS Key Yourself?
If you have one working master key, the 1997-2000 LS400 supports an on-board programming sequence involving pedal presses, ignition cycles, and door open/close steps with strict timing windows. It is doable but finicky. If you miss a timing window, you start over. And you can only attempt it about three times per key before the system locks you out and requires professional reprogramming.
The LS430 requires a pin code for programming, which means professional diagnostic tools. There is no DIY on-board procedure for this generation.
Your LS460 smart key requires OBD-II programming with server authentication. This is professional-only territory. We handle it on-site with Autel IM608 and the right software subscriptions.
The LS500 requires Lexus Techstream with dealer server access. No aftermarket tool can program new keys for this generation. We are upfront about that and will point you to the right dealer if needed.
