2014 Lexus LS
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

2014 Lexus LS Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Over at Lake Los Carneros in Goleta, I got a call from a woman who had already talked to the dealer before she called me. They gave her an appointment more than a week out and a price that made her pause. She looked up whether anyone else could do it, found me, and figured she had nothing to lose by asking.

She'd been using the metal emergency insert key for three days. The fob would occasionally wake the car if she held it right against the start button, but touch unlock on the door handles was completely gone, and half the time the dash showed a key-not-detected warning even when she was sitting in the seat.

I met her in the neighborhood, pulled the fob open, and the CR1632 inside was at the floor. Voltage was barely there. I swapped the battery, seated it clean, and tried again. Touch unlock on both front doors came back immediately. The warning cleared.

But the start behavior was still inconsistent, and when I checked the fob function more carefully, one of the four buttons had a dead feel to it. The battery fix solved part of the problem. The fob itself had an internal issue, probably from years of being dropped. She needed a new one programmed.

I had the right replacement fob with me. I ran the registration sequence through the OBD port, let the system go through its reset, and confirmed all four buttons and both door handles in the driveway before I packed up. She was back to fully normal in about 45 minutes including the diagnostic time on the original fob.

She mentioned the dealer had quoted a figure that made the job feel like a luxury purchase on top of a luxury car. She paid a fraction of that. Same result.
