Got a call from a woman near the Montecito Country Club who was standing next to her 2002 Lexus LS 430 with one dead key and no spare. She said the key would turn the ignition, dash lights came on, but the engine just cranked and quit. Classic immobilizer rejection. The SECURITY light on the instrument cluster was blinking steady, which on the LS 430 means the 4D-68 chip inside the remote head key stopped answering the immobilizer ECU challenge.
She had already called her Lexus dealer. They told her to tow it in, quoted her a wait for parts, and gave her a number that made her start Googling alternatives. That is how she found me.
I pulled up, connected my programmer through the OBD-II port under the dash, and read the immobilizer module. Her car's transponder ECU, part number 89990-50010, was healthy. The existing key's chip had just gone flaky. Happens on 4D chips after twenty-plus years of heat cycles in a center console.
Cut a new key to the HYQ12BBK profile, programmed the fresh 4D-68 chip, and registered it to her transponder ECU. Tested ignition start, tested all three remote buttons from twenty feet away. Everything responded on the first press.
The whole thing was about 30 minutes in her driveway. She kept looking at the car like she expected it to argue. It didn't.
