A guest staying in the Upper Village area of Montecito called me on a Sunday evening. She had driven down from somewhere north and her 2000 Lexus LS was sitting in a lot while she was getting dinner. When she came back out, nothing worked. The remote wouldn't lock or unlock the doors and the engine wouldn't start. I got there around 7:30. First thing I did was check the blade and housing. The CR1616 she had installed was seated fine and the contacts looked clean. The issue was that her original key had a stress fracture in the housing right where the blade meets the body, probably from years of use and a keychain that put sideways pressure on it. The internal components were still intact, so the key had been limping along. Then it gave up.
I cut a replacement blade to her vehicle on the spot, programmed the new remote head key through the OBD port, and ran a full test: remote lock, remote unlock, both buttons, ignition start, door locks cycling. She was back in the car before 9.
She mentioned the dealer quote almost as a footnote. She had already moved on.
