2017 Lexus LS Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A body shop at the Camino Real Marketplace area in Goleta called me on a Thursday afternoon. A 2017 Lexus LS had come out of collision repair and needed a replacement smart key. They had already called another locksmith. That locksmith got an error partway through programming and walked off the job without clearing anything. The smart key ECU was sitting in a fault state, rejecting every new registration attempt.

The shop foreman told me the first guy said it needed to go to the dealer. He said it like he half believed it.

I drove out with my bench programming setup. The fault state on these is not a death sentence if you have the right tools. I pulled the smart key module, connected at the EEPROM level, cleared the locked fault condition, and rebuilt the key registration table from a clean state. Then I ran the full authorization sequence through the OBD port, registered the new fob, and walked every function: door handles, lock, unlock, the remaining buttons, start button response with the fob inside the cabin and again from outside to check the antenna range.

It took about 90 minutes total, most of that the reset timer and the authorization handshake. The system accepted the key on the first clean attempt after the module work.

The shop foreman watched the whole thing. At the end he said he wished they had called me first. The dealer alternative was a flatbed, a multi-day wait, and a bill that would have made the repair estimate look modest. I carry the bench tools specifically because jobs like this one exist.
