A homeowner in North Fillmore called me on a Saturday morning with a problem that had a layer on top of the actual key problem. He lived in a gated HOA community.
His LS was parked inside the gate, the smart fob had stopped being recognized, and the tow company he called first couldn't get in. Commercial vehicles needed advance approval from the HOA board, and a flatbed on short notice wasn't getting added to that list by the weekend.

The fob itself looked fine. The factory fob matched what should be on the car, and the CR1632 inside still had some voltage when I checked it. But some voltage and enough voltage are different things on this system. The cell was borderline, and the contact was sitting slightly off center, just enough to cause intermittent communication. The vehicle security system wasn't seeing a clean handshake.
I reseated the battery, cleaned the contacts, and retested before doing anything else. The fob started waking the car up again, but the touch-unlock on the driver handle was still lagging. I went through the whole car, both door handles, the lock button on the handle, each fob button, ignition response. Everything came back solid after about ten minutes of confirmation.
His LS never left the driveway. No tow, no HOA paperwork for a flatbed, no dealer appointment on a Monday. He told me he'd already looked up what the dealer would charge and had mentally written off most of the day. This was done before noon.
